Uber 555

While Uber awaits their new Mission Bay campus to be built, they need more space to accommodate their rapidly growing workforce. As part of this effort, they acquired 18 floors at 555 Market Street in San Francisco on a short term lease.

Because of the impending Mission Bay campus, this space is meant as a temporary home. The idea of temporary permanence informed much of the design from a material perspective. Plywood, unistrut, and exposed concrete help to tell that story.

Small booths designed as places for one or two people to work or relax away from their desks. Because these structures project from the core of the building, they were unofficially named Pop-Outs.

Each floor occupied by Uber is named for a different international city where Uber has a presence. The brand story emerged as a way to identify these cities and provide life and color to the space. Color palettes and patterns inspired by the sights, culture, and history of each city came together to create a rich, vibrant workplace. The patterns were developed at a large scale, reminiscent of the dazzle camouflage experiments the Navy used during World War II, were hand painted and used to help the Pop-Outs blend into their backgrounds.
